Love Yoga? Take Teacher Training with Sana Vida

If you’ve come to this blog, chances are that you are in a yogic frame of mind.  Are you just curious? Have a practice, whether it includes asana (postures) or meditation (dhyana)? Or are you simply moving towards balance and being more conscious in the present moment?

Perhaps you’re just broadening your horizons and learning a bit more about the yogic lifestyle.  However you came across this post, if you’re seeking or simply pondering your life’s purpose, then Sana Vida Yoga Teacher Training is an excellent resource to consider and here’s why:

You will get to know yourself in ways you didn’t think were possible.

Participating in a yoga teacher training program is an incredibly eye-opening experience. Becoming a teacher is a humbling process.  You’ll look back remembering how nervous you were when you had to get up in front of all the other trainees, and your teachers, to teach one single round of a sun salutation and by the end of the program, you’re teaching an entire sequence!  To grow as people, we have to come outside of our comfort zones and a lot of self-reflection must take place.

At Sana Vida Teacher Training, students will also be learning the basics of Ayurveda, the sanskrit word for “science of life,” where they will learn how to identify their specific mind/body type (dosha) and make the best choices regarding diet, lifestyle, and nutrition.  Understand why your energy levels are the way they are and find the balance your body needs for optimum health.  Ayurveda is a most complete and personalized
system of holistic medicine, healthcare and maintenance for the whole
body, mind and spirit.  Gina Caccavalla, founder of AyurYogaSpa,  will be leading the way on all teachings of Ayurveda and has over 30 years of professional experience on the matter.

You will have a healthier mind, body and spirit than you did when you started.

Many people come to yoga in search of something greater.  Whether it’s to get in shape, become more ‘flexi,’ heal an injury or any other reason, yoga will change you.  It starts with the feeling of calmness you get after a practice that you take with you and eventually lasts longer.  You notice your energy levels start to change, your way of thinking, the way you look at food and your respect for your body and mind.  You begin to look at food as fuel and not just something to mindlessly stuff in your face when you’re having cravings.  Your personal relationships will change.  You’ll gain more patience.  This is something that both yoga and Ayurveda will help you to understand; that the mind body and spirit really are all connected and you cannot heal one while ignoring another.

Magical Maui!

I am still feeling all a-glow after our fantastic week-long retreat at Lumeria Maui! There is something about the islands of Hawaii that is powerfully healing beyond words. And we were blessed with an incredibly special group of retreat participants. Lumeria Maui could not have more gracious to us, and I am happy we picked their location for our first Hawaiian retreat!

One of the amazing things that strikes me here in Maui is the acceptance of aging naturally with ease and grace; the high regard and respect for elders and their wisdom; spontaneity and youth at any age……

We were treated to several rainbows in what is said to be the rainbow capital of the world. ❤ This is the beautiful place in which we stayed…..Lumeria’s website is http://www.lumeriamaui.com/ We hope to do another retreat there in 2014!

All of our organic, locally produced meals were spectacular. Wow the food was A-MAZING!

Since my return to the ‘mainland’, something to ponder has come my way. Interestingly enough it is about the power of the islands that I previously mentioned:

Lemurian Journey:

If you have ever wondered why you have been ‘pulled’ to Kauai, or have a calling or longing to be on Kauai, you may want to consider a Lemurian connection. Lemuria, found during or prior to the Atlantean Civilization, is also known as (Mu) which is considered to be a place found within the Pacific Ocean, included but not limited to the Hawaiian Islands, Fiji Islands, Easter Island… and part of the Los Angeles area. Lemurian people were highly evolved in meditation and used the language of energetic, sound, vibration and extra sensory perception which was thought to be accessed through their third eye, (yin tang) section of their body. Some believe that Lemurians were a culture focused on living within the land and nature harmoniously and organically, without the use of scientific technology. Those who are ‘called’ for this type of journey have found this to be a pivotal piece to their own healing which helps bring clarity and one closer to a higher vibrational consciousness.

Lemurian Connection

I am looking forward to many, many more retreats in the near future….we will keep you posted! In the meantime, you can find me in Westhampton Beach, NY all summer long. I am teaching and seeing clients privately at Hamptons Yoga Healing Arts and surfing up a storm up here!

Until next time…..Namaste,

Gina

Diet, Nutritional Counseling with Gina

Through the Diet, Nutrition and Lifestyle coaching I received with Gina via Skype, I came to this epiphany: There is something I noticed today about my eating. No matter what my weight was, I used to praise or shame myself for my food choices. Now I eat what I want. If I am craving a treat, I have a treat and I don’t feel guilty about it. I just make sure the rest of my meals are on the lighter side etc. The other day we had a meeting, people were passing around miniature candies. I had 1 and then another and then another. 3 minis. They are those little bite size candies. I felt like that was enough and I stopped. Someone came up to me and offered me some more and I said,” No thank you, I’ve had enough.” I responded almost automatically. In my mind I said, ” I’ve had enough” and that was that. I remember talking to Gina months ago about my eating and saying that I often had the feeling that there would never be enough. What a change!! In the past I would have “deprived” myself and told myself I’m too big, that I shouldn’t eat those things, and then I’d end up eating 12 of them and then feeling guilty about it. I’ve really noticed that my internal dialogue has changed. I’ve let go of a lot of guilt and shame. This is huge and I feel so much “lighter” and very grateful. I know now that I just need to make a few little changes and the weight will come off.

Breakfast Recipe Review

I made the breakfast recipe the fast way. Didn’t do the crock pot last night so I decided try to do all the same things, just on the stove top. I added ghee then nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, coriander. Added rice to roast a bit, then water, apple, a drizzle maple syrup, and a few golden raisins. IT WAS DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!! I learned a few things… one, I don’t like cloves I never have and I only add them because I thought I should. My mom hates cloves too, so it’s genetic. Two, I’m glad I left the ginger out, apparently I don’t like that flavor combination. I liked that it was more solid. The rice wasn’t mush like it is in the crockpot. The rice was still rice and the apples were still chunks. Also, in the crockpot I seem to make it way too sweet. Because I really only made two portions on the stove top, I knew how much to add. In the crockpot it’s way too sweet I add too much maple syrup and too many raisins. So I could definitely use this as my “go to” recipe, switching it up with pears. I feel satisfied and like I did something good for my body.

Quickest Way To Become A Female Entrepreneur Rock Star

The following guest post is from Ashley Steinmetz, CEO and Chief Digital Marketing Strategist at Perfect Wave Marketing

A DASH OF MEDITATION

Knowledge is power. You hear phrases and quotes throughout your whole life but they rarely click or make an impression on you until you are ready to receive them. After meeting and working with Gina Caccavalla of AyurYogaSpa, the phrase, ‘knowledge is power,’ definitely made an impression on me. Up until then, I thought living a healthier more balanced life meant going to the gym more often. Don’t get me wrong, that does help and after a great workout I feel unstoppable. But now I couple my workouts with meditation. If someone would have told me that I would be meditating later on in my life I would probably have a smart ass comment about it and wonder when I turned into a hippie. Allow me to explain just how meditating has helped me. I am a female entrepreneur. I run a successful digital marketing agency helping clients in all industries catapult their businesses to rock star status through online campaigns. Everything I ever built business wise I did on my own with no financial help. I would kill myself every day working non stop so I could achieve business success. I didn’t realize that with a little meditation, I could work smarter, not harder and increase my bottom line exponentially.

INTRODUCING MEDITATION TO MY WORK SCHEDULE

Gina Caccavalla cleared up any of my preconceived notions about meditating and enlightened me on how it could actually help me professionally. And it has. By practicing clearing my mind, I come back to reality feeling stronger, refreshed and I make smarter business decisions. I toss aside thoughts that don’t take priority and are clouding my mind.

WHERE TO MEDITATE

You can meditate anywhere. And no, you don’t have to sit in the lotus position doing hand mudras (this is what I pictured before I began) but it does help. There are actually reasons for different hand mudras and breath work depending on what you are trying to achieve. You’re not a loser if you don’t meditate for hours. In fact you should feel a since of accomplishment for doing something nice for yourself just by trying to meditate a few minutes a day.

If you are business minded like myself, and you want a tool to expedite getting to the top of your game, you should try meditation. Try it with guidance because I would have never known what I was doing without Gina. Everyone has different goals in mind when introducing meditation, mine was to grow professionally without killing myself so that I could enjoy the benefits of business success in my personal life. Meditation helps me find balance between work and play. I am stronger mentally and I see things with such clarity now.

HOW TO START

Gina, my Ayurveda practitioner offers wellness consults and she can guide you to achieving balance in your life with meditation. She should be in every female entrepreneur’s Skype contact list…and yes, she can do this through Skype if you can’t meet in person. Also, I would recommend her to any company wanting to do a meditation workshop for its employees. Talk about having a more efficient team to increase sales.

But don’t just take it from me. Do some more research. Below is an article highlighting benefits of business and meditation.

Love Letter To Ayurveda

Love Letter to Ayurveda

by Leigh Rowan, Executive Assistant at AyurYogaSpa

This morning, I woke up at the crack of dawn (not even…more like 4:15am!) to join Gina in her early morning routine. I have been a late night person all of my life, and I usually rise between 7 and 8am. So this was a BIG deal for me to be up before the sun. We attended a 6am Hot Yoga Vinyasa class at Balance Yoga, and I felt heavenly afterward, as I knew I would. But I also knew that I would crash at some point this afternoon from the lack of sleep. So, after learning from Gina for several years now about Ayurveda, I looked at my day and promised myself I would leave room for self care to ensure that I would make it through until bedtime.

As expected, I hit a massive wall around 2pm, and thought I was going to fall asleep, face first, onto my computer’s keyboard! Wow was I absolutely exhausted. With a little resistance from my hard-worker, over-achiever brain, I excused myself from my work for about twenty minutes to practice some Yoga Nidra (guided, deep relaxation). I have discovered a great app for it on my iPhone (the link for this app is at the end of this post) so I can practice anywhere, anytime…even in my car (parked of course!) It is said that fifteen minutes of Yoga Nidra is equivalent to a two hour nap, so what better time for it then when I desperately need a nap but have no time for one?

Twenty minutes later, I rose from my peaceful ‘slumber’, opened the curtains to let lots of light in (Ayurveda would call this Sight Therapy), and turned on some jammin’ Michael Franti music (Ayurveda would call this Sound Therapy). And Voila! I am impressively no longer tired and really do feel as if I took a two hour nap. And it only took me twenty minutes. This stuff is POWERFUL medicine, folks!

You see, 5 years ago, I would have felt that wave of tiredness hit me, and then I would have immediately been on a mission to hunt down some cups or cans of extreme caffeine. And then I would be wide awake (if just briefly) but also a jacked up, jittery mess. That is all I knew how to do, though. Now I am discovering different, even more potent tools to aid me in my daily life. Ayurveda (and Gina) are two of the most beautiful blessings I have ever received .<3

I will take the prescriptions of Ayurveda (fun music, yoga nidra, and sunshine, among thousands of others) ANY day over my old habits. The effectiveness of such seemingly simple techniques continues to amaze me….day after day 🙂

Want to continue the conversation about Ayurveda? Reply to me with your thoughts or questions in the comment section.

iphone app that I use for Yoga Nidra can be found by clicking here

Ayurveda is a Journey of Healing, Learning and Love

It’s funny, 20 years ago I lectured regularly on the health value of coconuts and women would get up and walk out on me…but yes…

In Ayurveda oils are highly regarded. A variety of high quality, expeller or cold pressed oils (non-hydrogenated) and the use of ghee are all therapies used internally and externally. However each persons case is very individual.

My only concern with media hype is that one size does not fit all.

It’s very important that the body is able to digest the oil in order for it to be properly assimilated and this is another discussion. For instance, an Ayurveda Assessment and Clinical Exam is a detailed account of your health history, past and present patterns, symptoms, current state of your mind and body, including your health/ life goals. Also considered is your time, commitment, budget and lifestyle. In every exam these measurements are taken into account for lengthy evaluation.

Ayurvedic Medicine is an extremely respectful and personalized holistic health care system. It also easily compliments any existing medical program or doctor prescribed diet.

The comprehensive exam is done to measure the level of toxic substance called Ama

The ability of digestion called Agni

The present state of the immune system, called Ojas

The vital and subtle life force energies connected to circulation, thought, emotions and breath, called Prana

We also monitor the “Pillars of Heath”:  Digestion, Elimination, Sleep and Energy.

All of this happens before we diagnose, prescribe and treat. Prescribed treatment programs always begin with Healing Body Therapies multi-day and then seasonally for mind body cleansing and rejuvenation, (which will include oils and coconut oil if indicated).
The prescribed treatment program also always begins and continues with diet, nutrition, teas and custom designed herbal formulas like the rasayanas you are taking (which also include oils like ghee and/or coconut oil for internal use.
The treatment program also includes daily lifestyle support and various mind body specific Sense Therapies (which include oils) to restore complete balance and harmony which becomes obvious in the first 3-6months more or less depending on the condition.

Instead of a quick fix,  Ayurveda is a journey of healing, learning and love. In the end you become confident, self-assured and self-empowered in managing your own health care with support of your chosen professional team.

Please visit my  YouTube Channeland webstore to see recipes, body therapies and products to support your journey to balanced health.
Namaste,
Gina

I Wanted to Share Something That Comes Up A Lot

This was my response to a client’s journal entry, thought it a useful tip for everyone…it comes up a lot 😉

Anxiety, Sadness, Depression, Mental and Emotional Highs and Lows, all feelings are in fact “linked” to your hormones. Hormones are linked and are strongly influenced by your daily mind/body, diet and lifestyle habits. Your daily habits, are your daily choices! “Choices are your “Nature Driven”or if you prefer, “God Given” Will of Power!” Assert your Power to Choose Wisely!

Hormone means “messenger”.  Feelings or hormones are another of Nature’s and/or God’s Gifts. Our built in GPS, our own personal guidance system, to let us know when we our in “alignment”/balance….in harmony with nature or out of balance and out of harmony. It’s that simple!

Allow a brief time or if need be, a “pitty party” for yourself and the message and then study the mind/body qualities of anxiety, sad , depressed, just like a scientist, or a yogini, objectively, with detached curiosity!
In Ayurveda this is an example of vata and kapha by nature, expressing in excess: mental emotional fatigue, nervous and physical exhaustion, low ojas, low immunity, low energy, poor sleep, digestive disturbances, increased fluid, muddy, dull, slow, heavy qualities.

Test question: What is a list of the opposite qualities and daily actions you would take to restore balance?
This is your Natural Holistic Mind/Body Prescription, your “Meds”!

Inconsistencies in self-care , chronic overdoing, over indulgence in anything and  self-punishment are just as self-destructive as long term side effects from overuse of some meds.
When anxiety, sadness and depression are related to grieving, any kind of loss or even sudden or drastic life change, it is always normal to have these feelings in addition to fear and missing our loved ones.

Practice gratitiude for anything , even something small or for someone. Remember to appreciate something or someone daily.

Create a daily moment of Gratitude, Love & Appreciation for you, your Mind, Body and Spirit.
Who would want to see you Happy?
What simple idea or image brings you Joy and Happiness?

In addition to a Dosha Balancing Diet, Therapies, Meditation and Lifestyle….

Try saying this 3 times out loud, then 3 whispers, then 3 silently:

” I Absolutely Deserve Abundant Health, Happiness and Prosperity in All Areas of My Body, Mind and Life!”

Imagine it!      See It!      Believe it!”
Love & Light,
G

Essential Oils and Your Health

Safety First, When Blending at Home

Like herbs, aromas need to be combined carefully for synergistic results. If used incorrectly, aromas can actually create imbalance and lead to irritation, and the like, remember a little goes a long way. Essential oils are potent, so exercise great care in blending and use. Never apply essential oils directly to the skin–instead, mix the recommended amounts in a base oil or in water. Test all oils for sensitivity, and consult your physician before using essential oils if you are pregnant or nursing or have a medical condition.

Blending – Essential oils can be added to massage oils, facial oils, bath water, shampoo, liquid cleansers, homemade facials, masks, water, spray misters and diffusers. Aromatherapy bath salts are a convenient, relaxing way of enjoying aromatherapy. They can also be blended for a specific dosha and worn in personal aroma lockets or diffused in your home.

This week I will blog about Lavender and Eucalyptus-Lemon Essential Oil benefits and how to use them. I only offer products I truly believe in so I will be featuring the essential oil brands I offer on my website here. Stay tuned for more essential oil posts and email me with questions here.

I can help you determine the right essential oils to use for your specific mind/body constitution during an affordable Wellness Consult.

An Intro to Ayurveda and Yoga

View AyurYogaSpa Programs

Ayurveda is Yoga’s big sister and a traditional system of natural medicine originating in India and greatly increasing in the U.S. today. It has been practiced for more than 5,000 years. Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word, meaning “science or knowledge of life” or the “practice of longevity.” Yoga means “yoke” or “union of the mind and body with spirit. Respectfully, the definition of Spirit is a personal one. When healthy, the mind and body are naturally in harmony, responsive to true happiness, self -healing and self-love. ‘Know Your Dosha’ Part 1

What's your dosha?

The next few posts will be Dosha influenced as I am leading up to posting a Dosha Quiz I created. Today, I’m talking about Pittas. Wondering if you are a Pitta?

Email me with any questions HERE and if you’d like to see some products that I offer to balance your dosha, visit my website by clicking HERE.

Pittas mind/body constitution will be upset by:

  • alcohol
  • cigarettes
  • overwork
  • overexertion
  • overheating

When out of balance, they are susceptible to feeling such negative emotions as:

  • hostility
  • hatred
  • intolerance
  • jealousy

Do things that cool the mind, emotions, and body. Avoid conflicts. Cultivate the virtues of honesty, morality, kindness, generosity, and self-control.

It is very important for Pittas to keep calm and to lead a pure and moderate lifestyle. Learn to choose foods, behaviors, relationships that balance Pittas. If you need help determining your Dosha or just have questions about Pitta balancing, feel free to leave me a comment or send me an email by clicking here Contact

How To Manage and Prevent Migraines Using Ayurveda

There are are many options when it comes to managing and even preventing migraines using Yoga, Ayurveda, and Sense Therapies such as diet, herbs, aromatherapy and lifestyle. Although to safely and accurately prescribe a mind/nervine tonic would require I see you for a health assessment, exam and consult. For now, I can offer some free, safe, simple and very effective advice.  First allow me to emphasize that this simple advice is only effective when you implement these recommendations gradually, regularly and consistently over time any where from a few weeks to a few months.

This is key when using natural methods. I have worked with several clients privately who had a chronic history of migraines. Their success was a result of regular consistent cumulative application of treatments and a “heapin helpin” of self-responsibility for their own health and healing journey.
In Ayurveda “the science or medicine of health and longevity” we seek to restore balance by managing the pillars of health. The pillars of health are digestion, elimination, sleep and energy, particularly sexual energy. Yoga is the sister mind/body fitness system to Ayurveda. Managing the pillars of health and managing them in relation to stress management for you is Most Important!
OK That said here is a generous amount of suggestions:

For Diet: Slow down, Plan Meals and Beverages Ahead
Try drinking warm Yogi Teas regularly. Any that are labeled Calming, Relaxation, Sleep or Meditation. Casual drink is 1 Cup and Medicinal dose is 2-3 Cups daily away from meals. Eat slowly in a relaxed environment..small, frequent, easy to digest meals when mildy hungry. Avoid skipping meals or waiting until starving. Eat meals made with natural foods like cooked whole grains, warm soups stews, and more cooked veggies. If time is an issue try Amy’s or Kashi Brand Frozen Foods. Reduce or avoid heavy, hot spicy, caffeine or processed food.

Healthy Elimination should occur 1 or more times a day. Take your time on the     potty. Massage your tummy in a clockwise motion. Note if the bowel movement is     formed or hard or soft.

Sleep – in bed by 10 and start winding down early. Soak feet in warm lavender water or massage your feet with Lavender Oil or my Lavender infused Pitta Bath & Body Oil. Practice evening reclined relaxation add some soothing music.

Energy in personal, professional or intimate relationships should be nourishing not chronically tiring, draining or stressful.

When stressed or having a migraine, reduce, avoid, eliminate excess sensory               stimulation, light, sound, people, talking, computer TV, Cell Phone, Driving etc..GO Home…Place a  cool wet lavender cloth over the center of your chest or rose infused   cloth or your eyes or both. A few drops of peppermint oil in a base of almond oil or my  pitta oil blend and massage into your temples and base of your skull neck area.
If you’d like to talk to me about a wellness consult, I can offer consults on the phone, in person and even on Skype. You can contact me directly by commenting here on my blog or visiting my website http://ayuryogaspa.com

A Quick Digestion Aid

If you want to aid in digestion after a full day of food, try chewing on or sipping tea made from some natural candied or fresh gingeroot pieces before during or after meal.
Other herbs and spices that can be added or used in combination are coriander, cumin and fennel.
